Heating cost comparison: what does the heat pump cost to run?

The purchase price is only half the story. Here you can see the running costs over 15 years — including investment, public subsidy, maintenance and price increases. You can change all assumptions yourself.

Everything at once? The heat pump calculator shows suitability, size, heating costs and federal state public subsidy in three steps.

Energy prices Austria, as of August 2026. Maintenance is estimated at 250 €/year for the heat pump and 200 €/year for the old system. The price increases are assumptions, not a forecast — change them and see how stable the result is.

What you have paid in total

Accumulated costs in euros — for the heat pump including investment minus public subsidy. Where the lines cross, you have recovered the extra cost.

Values as a table
Where such calculations like to sugarcoat: Many calculators assume a seasonal performance factor of 4,5 — this is achieved with underfloor heating in a new build, not with radiators in an old building. We calculate with realistic values from field studies, around 15 % below the data sheet specifications. And we are cautious with the PV share: heat is needed in winter, solar power is available in summer. Over 30 % coverage is unrealistic without a large battery.
