Public grants for heat pumps in Austria

The federal grant for heating replacement has been exhausted since 10 July 2026, new applications are currently not possible. The public grants of the nine federal states continue, and 360 million euros in federal funds are budgeted for 2027. What this means for your planning in concrete terms.

Federal grant: currently no new applications possible

The federal budget of the Sanierungsoffensive (renovation initiative) for 2026 has been exhausted since 10 July 2026. New registrations and applications for boiler replacement („Sauber Heizen für Alle" - clean heating for everyone) are currently not possible. The Sanierungsbonus (renovation bonus) was already closed for new applications on 2 February 2026 to concentrate funds on heating replacement.

Applications already submitted remain valid and will continue to be processed. For 2027, the funding framework is budgeted again with 360 million euros, for the first time separated into thermal renovation and boiler replacement.

We are deliberately writing this so clearly here because many portals continue to advertise with "up to 7.500 euros federal grant". That was correct until July 2026 — today it is misleading. If you are planning now, you should know the situation instead of relying on money that is currently not available.

Which programmes apply in your federal state, how much is available and when to submit the application is shown in the Förder-Check (grant check) — or directly on the page of your federal state in the table below.

What is still possible now

  • Federal state grants continue. All nine federal states have their own programmes with their own budgets. Depending on the state and project, four-figure amounts are possible here — in some states significantly more.
  • Municipality grants are added on top in many regions and are regularly overlooked because they are hard to find.
  • Tax deductibility via the Öko-Sonderausgabenpauschbetrag (eco special expenses lump sum) if a federal grant has been paid out.
  • Plan now, submit later. Quote, heating load calculation and proofs need lead time. Those who have the documents ready in the drawer can submit them on the first day of the next tranche — and that is exactly what matters when a pot is empty within a few months.

Federal state grants at a glance

The conditions change constantly and depend on the building type, old system and partly on income. That is why you will not find any amounts here that might be wrong next week, but only where you need to start:

Federal state What it is about Last checked
Vienna Up to 35 % of the costs, max. 8.000 € (geothermal +4.000 €), with income limits. Funding authority
Lower Austria No direct grant: annuity grant via the Eigenheimsanierung (home renovation programme), heating replacement also as a single measure. Funding authority
Upper Austria 100 € per kW, max. 1.700 € (geothermal up to 2.800 €), application after installation. Funding authority
Salzburg Up to 3.000 € (max. 40 %), existing buildings only, even without federal grant. Funding authority
Styria According to the state, no federal state grant for heat pumps for the foreseeable future. Funding authority
Tyrol 25 % grant plus bonus for climate-friendly heating — one of the more highly endowed programmes. Funding authority
Vorarlberg 2.000 € plus 1.000 € bonus, halved for air-source heat pumps; application until 31.12.2026. Funding authority
Carinthia 3.000 € plus supplements for solar and hydraulic balancing (up to 4.700 €), also runs without the federal government. Funding authority
Burgenland 30 %, max. 2.000 €, social supplement possible; application up to 12 months after invoice. Funding authority

"Last checked" means: On this day we read the guidelines of the respective funding authority and compared them with our information. It does not mean that nothing has changed since then — the funding authority itself is always legally binding.

The installers in our network know the programmes of their federal state and usually handle the applications for you. Ask about this explicitly during the quote discussion — the effort required from you differs significantly depending on the company.

Your public subsidy by place of residence

Some municipalities add their own grant to the federal state's public subsidy, usually a few hundred euros. Select your federal state and municipality, and you will see the federal state and municipality with all conditions in one overview.

Choose your federal state, then you will see all public grants with their conditions at a glance.

Municipalities checked so far in the districts of Bruck an der Leitha, Wiener Neustadt, Eferding and Oberwart. More to follow. The municipality's guideline is always the binding one.

The order that costs money if you mix it up

  1. Get a quote — before anything else.
  2. Submit your public subsidy application and wait for approval.
  3. Only then place the order and have it installed.
If you install first and then submit the application, you will miss out on most programmes. This is the most expensive avoidable mistake when replacing your heating system.

What has recently changed

Public subsidy programmes often change without notice — and you usually only notice when an application is rejected. That is why we keep track of what we have noticed:

  • Lower Austria — Sauber Heizen für Alle

With the federal freeze, new registrations for „Sauber Heizen für Alle" (Clean Heating for Everyone) with the Lower Austria top-up have also been suspended; existing registrations remain reserved.

  • Federal Government — Sanierungsoffensive (Refurbishment Offensive)

The 2026 federal budget for „Kesseltausch" (boiler replacement) and „Sauber Heizen für Alle" (Clean Heating for Everyone) has been exhausted; new registrations have not been possible since then.

  • Federal Government — Sanierungsbonus

The „Sanierungsbonus" (refurbishment bonus) has been closed to new applications in order to concentrate the remaining funds on heating replacement.
