The federal grant for switching from oil, gas, coal or electric storage heaters is running again. Deliveries and work from 7 October 2026 are eligible for grants, registration is open from 2 November 2026 and closes on 31 December 2026 at the latest. The written conditions have been available since this week. A flat rate of 5.000 Euro is available for a heat pump.

What is available

According to the information sheet from the processing agency KPC (version 10/2026), the public subsidy is a fixed amount and not a proportion of the invoice:

  • Heat pump (air-to-water, brine-to-water, water-to-water): 5.000 Euro
  • Wood central heating: 6.000 Euro
  • Connection to local or district heating: 4.000 Euro
  • Bonus for deep drilling or well for brine and water heat pumps: 5.000 Euro
  • Bonus for a solar thermal system from 6 m² collector area: 2.500 Euro

If an air-to-water heat pump works with a refrigerant whose GWP value is above 150, you receive 20 per cent less. This applies to monobloc units up to 50 kW and split units up to 12 kW; a GWP higher than 750 is not permitted at all. In addition, the EHPA quality seal, an entry on the list of eligible heat pumps, a maximum flow temperature of 55 °C in the heating system and installation by an installer are required.

Private individuals owning or renting a single- or two-family house or terraced house are eligible to submit an application. There is no income assessment, and a primary residence at the site is not required. If a climate-friendly local or district heating network is accessible, connecting to it takes priority: in that case, the heat pump is only eligible for a public subsidy if it costs at least 25 per cent less than the connection.

How it works

First, the project is registered online at sanierungsoffensive.gv.at using ID Austria or a copy of an ID card and the report from your federal state's energy advisory service. Once confirmed, the money is reserved for you for nine months. During this period, the system must be installed, paid for and invoiced before the application can be submitted. Projects that have already been completed can also be registered if the work was carried out after the cut-off date. Federal state public subsidies can be added, but all grants combined must not exceed the total investment.

Context

The lump sums have already been set at the 2027 level. According to the ministry, the public grant will cover around 20 per cent of costs on average in future, compared to around 30 per cent so far in 2026. However, there is no percentage cap – the fixed amount is what counts. The amounts will remain the same for 2027, with applications possible from 4 January 2027. Unlike now, however, the application in 2027 must be submitted before installation, delivery and the start of work. According to the funding agency, the amounts are fixed, though individual conditions may be specified in more detail before the launch. The funding round running until the end of the year will end earlier if the budget is exhausted beforehand.

What you can do now

  • Book an appointment with your federal state's energy advisory service now. Without a report, registration is not possible.
  • If you want to replace your heating system this year, you can already place an order: deliveries and services from 7 October are eligible for a public subsidy, and registration opens on 2 November.
  • In the quote, ask for the GWP value of the refrigerant and entry on the eligible list.
  • Ensure all invoices are issued in your own name.
  • Anyone who installed their system before 7 October receives nothing from this round. In that case, it is worth looking at the federal state public subsidy under Förderungen.
