Federal grant exhausted — what is still possible now

Anyone currently planning a heat pump and hoping for the federal grant will receive unpleasant news: the pot is empty. On the website of the Sanierungsoffensive (renovation initiative), the same sentence appears for both focus areas — Kesseltausch (boiler replacement) and Sanierungsbonus (renovation bonus): Budget exhausted, new registration or application is no longer possible.

We are writing this so clearly because portals continue to advertise with "up to 7.500 euros federal grant". That used to be correct. Today, it leads to a calculation that does not add up.

How it came to this

A maximum of 360 million euros was available for 2026, with grants awarded from 24 November 2025. On 2 February 2026, the Sanierungsbonus (renovation bonus) for thermal-energetic renovation was stopped first — expressly with the justification of being able to continue the Kesseltausch (boiler replacement). The calculation did not work out: later, the submission option for the Kesseltausch also had to be ended in order not to exceed the commitment framework.

The federal website does not give an exact date for this second stop. It only writes that it has "now" also affected the Kesseltausch.

What this means for you

If you have already submitted: Existing registrations and applications are not affected by the stop and will continue to be processed. You can check the status via KPC-Online.

If you have not yet submitted: There is currently no way to get the federal grant. Three things remain nevertheless:

  1. The federal state grants run from their own budgets. All nine federal states have their own programmes, and they are not automatically stopped as well. Watch out for two exceptions: in Carinthia and Lower Austria, individual programmes are linked to the federal registration — there, the stop does have an indirect effect.
  2. Municipality grants are added on top in many regions and are regularly overlooked because they are hard to find. A call to the Gemeindeamt (municipal office) takes ten minutes.
  3. Plan and get documents ready. Quote, heating load calculation and proofs need lead time. Anyone who has the folder ready in the drawer can submit on the first day of the next tranche — and that is exactly what matters when a pot is empty within a few months.

The order that costs money if you mix it up

Get a quote, then submit the public grant application and wait for approval, and only then place the order. Anyone who installs first and submits the application afterwards will miss out on most programmes. This is the most expensive avoidable mistake when replacing a heating system — and it happens more often when people come under time pressure because the heating fails in winter.

What happens next

Whether and when new funds will be released for 2027 is currently not stated on the federal website. Figures circulating about this come from announcements and not from a published guideline — we therefore do not list them here as fact.

As soon as this changes, it will be here. We check the federal website and all nine federal state funding authorities continuously; on the public grant overview you can see for each federal state when we last checked.
