Efficiency class (ErP energy label)

The EU energy label classifies heat pumps into efficiency classes. klimaaktiv recommends the highest available class at a 40 °C flow temperature.

Since September 2015, heating appliances, including heat pumps, must carry an EU energy label, just like fridges or washing machines. This is based on the EU Ecodesign rules, often referred to in technical jargon as "ErP" (Energy-related Products). In addition, there is a system label that assesses combinations, for example a heating appliance with a solar system and storage tank.

What the label tells you

The label shows an efficiency class for space heating, which for heat pumps is split into low and medium flow temperatures. It is suitable for an initial comparison of appliances. However, how efficiently your system actually runs depends heavily on the house, heating surfaces and settings. This is only shown by the seasonal performance factor.

Recommendation from klimaaktiv

The klimaaktiv guide recommends installing heat pumps of the highest possible efficiency class at a flow temperature of up to 40 °C: A++ for air-to-water heat pumps, and A+++ for all others. According to the guide, details of the energy label should always be part of the estimate.

Further proof of quality

In addition to the label, there is the quality label of the European Heat Pump Association (EHPA), which requires minimum SCOP values to be met, among other things. Subsidy bodies of the federal government and federal states sometimes require their own proof. The best way to check whether your preferred appliance is compatible is with eligible appliance and the Förder-Manager (subsidy manager).
